Even MORE holiday for your £ in Turkey!

Update: a few weeks ago I wrote the blog below, about the difference in the £ exchange rates to the Euro and the Turkish Lire. Since then the £ has risen even further against the TL and as of today you can now get 4.62 TL to the £ - back to the peak in late 2015.

So there's never been a better time to holiday in Turkey... your £ has never given you so much spending power! "Fill yer boots" as they say....

My blog from Dec 2016:
Euro to the £ 14% drop since mid 2015...

TL to the £ - 8% increase since mid 2015...
Politics aside, there's no disputing the fact that the uncertainty over Brexit has taken its toll on the £ / Euro exchange rate over the last few months. As you can see from the charts above, you now get 14% fewer Euros for your pound than in the 2015 holiday season. So a European holiday is much more expensive than two seasons ago.

Conversely, the same £ buys you 8% more Turkish Lira now than in summer 2015!

So, pound for pound, a holiday in Turkey gives you 22% more spending power than a holiday in Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Portugal, the Canaries.... or anywhere else in the Eurozone for that matter, compared to spending power in 2015.

Looking for value for money in 2017?

Come to Turkey. You know it makes sense!!

2017 - better or worse?

I was really hoping this year would be better for tourism in Turkey.
I admit, that's partly self-interest: after all, Fiona and I have invested a lot of time, money and effort on building a business there over the last ten years and, apart from anything else, another difficult year in 2017 would obviously be tough on the bank balance!
But that is genuinely only a part of it. Basically... I love Turkey and, above all, its generous and friendly people. I just hate seeing the turmoil this great and fascinating nation is going through.
I'm not going to get involved in the politics of the current situation as
a) I have no right to, and
b) whatever side I were to come down on, I would upset one or more of my dear Turkish friends!
What I have to say has nothing to do with's just about ordinary people's livelihoods. It's just not fair!!
It broke our hearts in 2016 to see so many tourism-based businesses suffering, through absolutely no fault of their own. Of course, some drop in tourist numbers was to be expected last summer because of the terrorist incidents and political unrest - but the reality was worse than expected. With so much negative -and inaccurate - media coverage, and with airlines creating a vicious circle by pulling flights to Turkey last Spring (meaning that people who still wanted to come couldn't actually get there!), it was something of a perfect storm in 2016.
Nevertheless, everyone we spoke to tried to remain positive and the general feeling was that things might improve in 2017 as long as Turkey could "stay out of the news" during the winter!
Given recent events, this was obviously a forlorn hope.
I want to be positive. I really do. I want to say to everyone: ignore the screaming headlines; the general anti-Turkey rhetoric in the UK media that demonises a whole nation over the actions of a few.
I want to say... just remember the amazing climate, the turquoise water, the beautiful food, the smiles of the locals, the jokes and banter with the local businesses...the beaches... the boats... the stunning historical sites. the breathtaking scenery..
I just hope it's enough. Turkey.. and Kalkan in particular.. my fingers are well and truly crossed for you.
